The Competitive Parent
The Ethics of Coaching Youth Football
by athletic trainer Christopher Tateo

Youth football has taken a black eye over the years. Parents and coaches have been charging Americas fields for years. Carrying on in a hostile manner, and supporting their child as if they were going to sign a million dollor contract the following year. There are a majority of parents who take advantage of the volunteer position as a coach and use it as a platform to propel their own children to stardom. While other's noche wins under their belts as they think it's a personal acheivement. Meanwhile the ones who suffer are the young players who have to learn football in a "win at all cost's" environment. The fun is totally taken out of football. I know personally as a child what a circus youth football can be. Now, as a coach of my childhood football team I witnessed not much has changed.

There are good coaches out there, but the majority go over board with the yelling, screaming, and harsh training tactics to get their players to perform. Coaches think the old Highschool methods they were sustained as a player will work with young kids. Kids 5 to 12 years old are very fragile emotional as well as physically. Through my 10 years of coaching youth football I can honestly tell you it can be extremely tough at times. Yes, a good coach can except kids for being uncoordinated, and physically undersized. It's the lack of confidence, the crying, fighting, complaining, and horsing around that really tests a coaches character.  Being a coach you have to wear the many hats of a doctor, psychologists, referee, equipment manager, and cheer leader when dealing with young children.

I wrote this book to give coaches and parents a new perspective of how they can create a stress free youth football environment. When used correctly, the innovative techniques in this book can help readers manage players, motivate players, organize practice sessions, and deal with the intangibles surrounding the youth football experience. Inside the pages of this Award Winning Book I give a blueprint of the three keys to winning football games that will give your football team the advantage into every football game.

Change starts with the parents and coaches of the football program. What ever role you have as a volunteer to your football team you must ackknowledge the important role you have in shaping a childs life. Remember, these children in a few short years are going to be future doctors, lawyers, contractors, and people of all walks of life. A coach can a be great influence on children by demonstrating social skills, communication skills, organization skills, and leadership qualities that children can supplement in the own lives down the road.
